Today we have a “Teenage Garage Sale” with the author of Henrietta The Dragon Slayer, Beth Barany!
My Special Things by Beth Barany
Author of the Henrietta The Dragon Slayer
Ivy, thanks for having me on Ivy Reads!
If I were having a garage sale of items from my teen years, here’s what you might see… And only because I thought they might have a better life somewhere else, not because I didn’t love them anymore.
1. Schwinn bike, 10-speed $250
I rode my bike every day to high school, five miles each day. Love it!
2. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo $5
I wanted to read a hard book, and I did. Boy, did I learn lots of words. The one I remember is “physiognomy” meaning face.
3. 12 issues of Bicyclist magazine $10
I daydreamed about biking across country while I read these magazines. I wanted to have adventures of my own!
4. Bicycle helmet and bike repair kit $30
If you’re going to buy the bike, you may as well get the rest.
5. Call of The Wild by Jack London $3
I loved this book, and would be happy to others fall I love with it.
6. French-English Dictionary $7
I started studying French at age 13 and found this dictionary indispensable, especially when I lived in Quebec, Canada as an exchange student at age 16. I started having adventures and this dictionary was such a big help.
7. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle $3
One of my favorite books of my teen years. I highly recommend it to everyone. I’m sure it had a deep influence on me as a writer.
What other things do you think I owned as a teen? I’m curious to hear what you think!
